A word from Dr. Javid
I’m Rihan Javid, a board-certified psychiatrist, Medical Director at St. Joseph’s Behavioral Health, and core faculty member at St. Joseph’s/Touro University Psychiatry Residency.
I believe in collaborative care, empowering patients to make choices that benefit their mental health, and fostering a supportive environment for shared decision-making. Central to my practice is a commitment to holistic psychiatry, which emphasizes the integration of mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of well-being. This approach allows me to understand my patients as whole individuals, tailoring treatment plans that resonate with their unique experiences and needs. By recognizing the mind-body connection, I incorporate lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness alongside traditional therapies, promoting overall wellness and prevention. I empower my patients to take an active role in their healing process, enhancing their motivation and engagement.
I have extensive experience treating a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. I have also worked with women experiencing peripartum mental health symptoms and have received specialized training in this area.
As a teacher of residents and medical students, I stay on top of the latest research and medications, which enriches my practice and enhances the care I provide to my patients. I have also worked in various clinical settings, including outpatient clinics, inpatient hospitals (both acute and long-term psychiatric units), UCSF Early Psychosis Center and psychiatric emergency services and departments, giving me the expertise to treat a wide range of mental illness severity.
My educational journey began at UC Berkeley, followed by a law degree from Northwestern University, and culminated in my medical degree from Touro University.
Outside of my professional commitments, I enjoy traveling, reading, and sports. I am dedicated to continuous learning and growth, and I look forward to connecting with others who share my passion for improving mental health care.
